Risperdal is an antipsychotic medication. It is an "atypical antipsychotic". It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain.

Risperdal is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression). It is also used in autistic children to treat symptoms of irritability. - Drugs.com

Side Effects of Risperidone

  • Insomnia or inability to fall asleep
  • Anxiety or restlessness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or orthostatic hypotension (a drop
    in blood pressure when standing up)
  • Constipation
  • Weight gain

Some of these side effects disappear with treatment, while others may not. [Patient} may experience other side effects not listed here. Please check with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if any side effect becomes
bothersome.

Increases in weight, blood sugar and cholesterol can occur with antipsychotics. Occasional blood tests will be required to monitor for changes. Healthy eating and regular exercise will reduce the chance of
these occurring.

Inform your Doctor as soon as possible if
you develop:

  • dizziness of fainting
  • tachycardia (rapid heart beat)
  • irregular periods or menstruation
  • difficulty urinating
  • muscle spasms (unusual weakness or movement of the face, tongue or hands)
  • muscle rigidity or stiffness
  • shaking or tremor
  • extreme restlessness

Many of these symptoms can be controlled either by dosage adjustment or by the addition of another medication.
